Words: 760
Pages: 3
Subject: Uncategorized

Write a paper broken off in 5 parts. The first four consisting of four 200 word essay, and the last part consisting of 750 words interpretive response to the book the Sun also rises. You can find the link at bottom for free access to the book.
Part 1
Do your best to answer each question for yourself. Choose one of the questions from chapters 1–7, answer it in a brief essay, and submit it.
All novels are based on language, but how does Hemingway use language in specific ways to create meaning in this novel?
Suggestions:
Pay special attention to the way scenes, characters, places, and so on are described in the novel. Periodically ask yourself, why does he do it this way? For example, as we discussed in lesson 3, at the beginning of chapter 3 of this novel, Hemingway describes a cab ride. Notice that he describes the opera house, the Avenue, and the New York Herald office. Jake knows Paris well enough to talk about specific places, rather than generic ones.
He does something similar on pages 37 and 43. Notice that you (the reader) are treated as one of Jake’s friends. Are you comfortable in that position? Pay attention and see if your feelings change as the novel progresses. This potential slow change in your feelings toward Jake and the other characters in the novel is very important.
Part 2
Do your best to answer each question for yourself. Choose one of the questions from chapters 8–12, answer it in a brief (200-word) essay, and submit it.
Pay attention to what happens when the characters travel. On page 81 Brett suggests that it’s a bad idea to ever leave Paris, but at the end of chapter 9 on page 95, several of the characters leave Paris and cross the border into Spain. Almost immediately, the tone of the novel changes. What is Hemingway suggesting by this change of tone?
Suggestions:
Read the beginning of chapter 10 (pages 96–100) carefully. Notice the way the Spanish landscape, the towns, and the people are described. Hemingway begins to use words like “good,” “clean,” “bright,” and “nice.” Does he ever use these words to describe Paris?
The characters, too, seem to change in Spain. Once he’s away from Brett and Paris, Jake seems to be in a better mood. He doesn’t seem to brood to much about his wound. He also seems to drink less. What do you think that indicates?
Part 3
This may be the most important section of the novel. Read it carefully. Do your best to answer each question for yourself. Choose one of the questions from chapters 13–18, answer it in a brief (200 word) essay, and submit it.
Chapter 13 begins with Jake and Bill saying good-bye to Harris, the Englishman. How does the tone of this scene in the country differ from the tone of the middle and end of the chapter as Jake and Bill meet their Paris friends in Pamplona?
Notice that Bill and Jake seem to really like Harris, who gives them a heartfelt gift of hand-tied flies.
Notice also that the men seem to lose track of time as they fish.
Contrast those feelings with the attitude Jake immediately adopts when Cohn’s telegram arrives, and the drama that commences almost immediately when they arrive in Pamplona.
Part 4
Do your best to answer each question for yourself. Choose one of the questions from chapter 19, answer it in a brief (200-word) essay, and submit it.
Notice at the beginning of chapter 19 that Montoya seems upset with Jake. Why?
Check out chapter 16 again. Montoya likes Jake because he has aficion. He seems upset with him for a related reason.
Part 5
Write a 750-word double-spaced interpretive response to The Sun Also Rises.
Your job in this paper is to interpret the novel and provide textual evidence for your conclusions. As you write, I’d like you to engage at least one of the articles you’ve read. That may include the Nagle article, as well as either of the articles you found on your own.
