readings. Please present your answers in a one- to two-page essay (typed, double-spaced,
12pt. font, and one inch margins), and use specific examples from the assigned text to
support your arguments.

Short Paper Option 1 – Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. Du Bois
How different were the ultimate goals of Washington and Du Bois? Was there a
difference between their long- and short-term goals? Whose approach do you agree with
and why?
Short Paper Option 2 – Ida B. Wells
Analyze Wells critique of lynching and her call to arms. What arguments did she use to
further her goals? Do you agree with her method and arguments? In your opinion, could
she have used a different approach?
Short Paper Option 3 – Andrew Carnegie
How did Carnegie explain the enormous wealth gap in the United States and what, if any,
responsibilities did men like him have to society? What would be his duty?
