General Guidelines
1. Literature reviews must be research-based or case-study journal articles from scientific peer-reviewed journals pertaining to therapeutic modalities. You must save it as a PDF to submit in D2L!
2. The journal articles must have been published in a referred journal (examples: Journal of Athletic Training, Athletic Therapy Today, American Journal of Sports Medicine, Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy, Journal of Sport Rehabilitation, American Journal of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, or Archives of Physical Medicine, etc.). Use articles from the year 2007 to the present.
Approved Topic Areas
1. The topic must be related to therapeutic modalities and must be specific to the modality indicated on your course schedule. This is a broad topic but I am giving you some room here to explore the literature and find articles that interest you. If you have any doubts, please get approval of the article before beginning your review.
2. Any case study used must devote a significant amount of time to the use of the modality in the treatment of an injury.

Formatting Guidelines
1. Each article summary should be a minimum of 2 pages, typed double-spaced with 1” margins all around, using 12 pt font (Arial, Times New Roman, Calibri, or something standard).
2. Reference Style – The article should be referenced at the beginning of the review, followed by your responses to the questions listed below. Use APA format for the citation
Example: (yes, it should be double spaced and have a hanging indent)

Content Guidelines
1. Provide the appropriate information as indicated below based on the type of journal article you chose. Your summary must be in your own words and not copied for the article’s abstract. You must cite your work appropriately. If you use a direct quote from the article, you must cite it. If you paraphrase statements from the article, you must cite it. Yes, that means you may have a citation for every sentence.
2. Each research-based article review should summarize the following information:
a. Purpose of the study & Research Questions (if provided)
b. Who were the subjects in the study
c. Methods or procedures used in collecting the data (a summary – not complete detail)
d. Results (i.e., what did the author(s) find)
e. Discussion (i.e., how do the findings compare with previous research & can the findings be integrated with previous research & how should the findings be applied to the “real-world”)
f. Reviewer’s critique (i.e., was it informative?, written well?, did you learn anything?, anything missing? How can you use the info clinically?)
3. Each case-study article review should summarize the following information:
a. Personal data (age, sex, race, etc.)
b. Physical signs and symptoms injury
c. Differential diagnosis (all the possible diagnoses) & Diagnosis
d. Treatment Plan: include rationale for each modality used
e. Clinical resolution (i.e. what was done to treat the condition; what were the outcomes for the athlete; how should these findings be applied to the “real-world”)
f. Reviewer’s critique (i.e., was it informative?, written well?, did you learn anything?, anything missing? How can you use the info clinically?)
*Class note: your review will also be graded on proper grammar and spelling.
*Copy of the article MUST be submitted
*All assignments MUST be submitted to D2L in the appropriate Submission Folder
Do’s and Don’ts
• DO put your name at the top of the Word document
• DO provide the article citation after your name to serve as the title of the assignment.
• DO NOT include a lengthy header that takes up 2-5 lines of text such as your name, course number, course name, instructor’s name, semester etc (this info does not count towards the page minimum)
• DO provide appropriate in-text citations
• DO NOT plagiarize or copy/paste from the article
• DO NOT copy from the abstract and use it as your summary
• DO save your article as a PDF file to submit
• DO NOT submit a website link to your article
• DO proof-read your summary to check for grammar, spelling and sentence structure before submitting
• DO check the formatting of your Word document to ensure margins and spacing is correct (right click on text, select paragraph, make sure line spacing is set to double space with no extra space before or after each line)
• DO make sure your article is a peer-reviewed case study or original research article (you can email it to confirm before you write your summary)
• DO use the library website to find a research article
• DO NOT use website articles, commentaries, or editorial articles for this assignment.
