This unit’s assignment is to write an argumentative essay using the problem-solution strategy. One of GGC’s four pillars is creativity, and one way to exhibit creativity is to propose novel (unique) solutions to a problem. Before we can propose solutions, we have to be able to understand and identify problems and have a working knowledge of solutions that have already been proposed or attempted by others (usually experts). Only after we gain understanding can we possibly propose a practical, credible solution. This unit’s assignment is to write an argumentative essay using the problem-solution strategy. A problem-solution essay is not a basic 5-paragraph essay; although there is a pattern for development, there is no formula. You must evaluate the needs of your intended audience and outline your essay to ensure unity and coherence. Some topics may require a few paragraphs of explanation of the problem, while others are common problems and need very little explanation. In either instance, you should explain why the problem is worthy of discussion, but remember that the solution should be the main focus of the essay. The solution should be the main focus of your thesis or enthymeme.
There might be experts who’ve proposed and tested multiple solutions to the problem you’ve experienced, and you can advocate for one of those solutions. Maybe your problem has a complicated, multi-step solution. Perhaps the problem is multi-faceted, so the solution is multifaceted, as well. Each facet may require a new topic sentence and evidence. As the writer, it is your job to determine the needs of the intended audience and follow through with unity, coherence, clarity, content, and formatting.
Additionally, please make sure you are reading the instructions, including the specific assignment requirements attached to the Assignment. You should self-edit your essay, then ask for assistance from a classmate or from the AEC for additional revision assistance.
Note in the instructions that I have some special rules and requirements when you submit your essay.
Underline your thesis and topic sentences.
Highlight 5 transitional words or phrases.
Meet the minimum word count of 900 words.
Use no more than 15% source content (150 words per 1000 words). Try to use logic, facts, personal narratives, observations, and testimonies of your own, uses sources for facts, statistics, vverifiable information, studies, etc. Use Google Scholar or websites of .gov or .org
Use MLA format.
Papers that do not meet the minimum word count or exceed an appropriate amount of source content will not be graded. You can check your own source content using the Turnitin feature I have enabled, but a good rule of thumb is to quote directly from a source only when necessary, and use your own ideas as the basis for your argument. Remember that this is an essay that will include source content as some of your evidence; this is not a research paper assignment, but rather an essay in which you integrate and cite source content.
