Overview and Purpose
The Analytical Book Review is a written assignment that builds on your Research Context Paper and will be completed individually. For this assignment, you will write an analytical review of the book you selected at the beginning of the course. Your paper will focus on how the book engages with three key concepts covered in the course. This assignment serves to help you achieve the following learning outcomes:
Participate in debates about contemporary development challenges by evaluating ideas and perspectives from various sources;
Analyze the historical and political origins of the international development system;
Describe key actors and institutions within international development and identify different perspectives about their roles; and
Outline how culture, gender, and other aspects of identity play a role in multiple issue areas across development studies.
In order to do well on this assignment, you should begin working on the paper well before the deadline. In other words, start reading your book as soon as possible!
For this assignment, you will write an analytical review of your selected book. Your book review should not simply contain a summary of the book’s content. Instead, the core question that will guide you is: “How does the book engage with three key themes covered in our course?” Your task is to analyze what the book tells you in light of what you learned about International Development. The purpose of doing this is to understand and analyze how the narrative connects to core development issues discussed in the course. In other words, when we are studying these development-related narratives, why should we care about the specific themes and concepts you picked? How do they help us understand real-world development issues?
Strive to finish reading your book early in the semester in order to have sufficient time for an in-depth analysis. Read and re-read your chosen book in an analytical manner, by using post-its, taking notes, or highlighting interesting and relevant quotes. Think about connections between facts and arguments discussed in your book and those covered in the course by comparing your study notes with your reading notes. Think about broad themes that you dealt with in the course (e.g., poverty, aid, colonization, sustainability) and concrete concepts (e.g., refugees, reconciliation, positionality, human rights). Each of the themes or concepts you discuss must be accompanied by a precise definition. In order to attest to their relevance, you must use specific quotes and examples from the book, and make reference to at least three additional sources that help support your discussion (one source for each theme). Note: These three sources are in addition to any course material you may cite. They should be non-fiction and can include media contributions, journal articles, and/or reports from non-governmental organizations, government agencies, or intergovernmental organizations.
Your book review must include the following elements.
An introduction that provides contextual information and outlines the three concepts you plan to address.
The main body of your paper should consist of three thematic sections that discuss the relationship between the book and three themes covered in IDEV*1000. Your descriptions should include references to appropriate source material to define the key themes and concepts, and direct quotes from the book to explain its connection to each theme. Keep in mind that this is an analytical assignment and that you should, therefore, avoid using personal opinion statements like “I think…” or ” I believe…” or ” I liked…”.
A conclusion that summarizes your discussion and offers your final thoughts on the book and its relation to development issues.
Appropriate in-text citations and a complete reference list.
Your review should be written in a formal style and avoid the use of personal pronouns. It should be a minimum of 1,500 words and a maximum of 1,700 words, excluding your reference list. Your selected sources, including the book you choose, must be cited using the Chicago Author-Date referencing style. Before submitting your book review, please check to ensure that you have included each of these elements:
A title page with the book review’s title, student name and number, and course information;
Correct essay structure, including an introduction, an essay body that is divided into appropriate sections with sub-headings, and a conclusion;
Complete in-text citations using Chicago Author-Date System (make sure to include correct page numbers for direct quotes) and a correctly-formatted reference list;
A word count between 1,500-1,800 words (not including the reference list at the end);
A file format that is either .doc, .docx or .rtf;
12-point font and double-spaced;
Page numbers; and
Includes the book title in the name of the file you submit via the Dropbox tool (e.g., Hope).
Submission
Save your paper as a Word document (.doc, .docx. or .rtf file). Then, submit your assessment electronically to the Analytical Book Review folder in the Dropbox tool. To locate the folder, select Dropbox from the Tools dropdown menu on the navbar.
