Improvement science and implementation science complement each other and are necessary to establish lasting changes in the existing culture. Improvement science drives the changes that need to occur. Leadership understands that the two work in tandem to solidify changes within the health care culture. The DNP as the leader understands that improvement efforts begin with a clear goal in mind and a measurement plan. The DNP incorporates the knowledge of clinical care, systems theory, and statistics into planning and recognizes that there is a multidisciplinary approach to enlisting change. In this unit, you will see the value and impact of teamwork in quality improvement and patient-reported outcomes from patients.
As part of the improvement, Deming’s Model for Improvement is one tool that the DNP leader will use to guide the improvement plan. First the DNP will address the MFI plan’s three questions: What are we trying to accomplish? How will we know that a change is an improvement? What changes can we make that will result in improvement? After these questions are answered, it is then that the PDSA cycle can then be employed.
