Kolhberg proposed that during middle childhood we see the first steps in an individual developing their own moral code. Kolhberg described three broad stages of moral development: Preconventional, Conventional, and Post Conventional. In order to measure a child’s level of moral development, Kolhberg devised the Heinz Dilemma a story with a philosophical question.
