Focus: America’s history of landed wealth has created an American culture of possibility respective to the possibility of wealth
Guiding Focus Question: How has the immensity of land and opportunity respective to class mobility in American created a commercially based society?
How I plan to write my paper: I plan to discuss Laurence Shames’s ‘The More Factor,’ particularly his idea that the immensity of land created the opportunity based society we now have. I will also discuss the idea on the powerpoint that “Americans’ unique identity is wrapped up in the idea that there is plenty of land to create whatever opportunity is possible (pp. 76-82). I will discuss modern day life where this opportunity has been transformed, namely in the idea of education for all, social media where all voices can be heard, change and evolve, and the downside of course, that “the ethics of decency has been upstaged by ethic of success” (Nyman Powerpoint Module 3). I hope to show how the past American idea of more land that meant social mobility is now replace with innovation respective to technology and education respective to earning potential.
