The nursing profession is subject to many concerns that affect nursing practice issues. There are legal concerns that all nurses must understand so that they are aware of any connection to their personal nursing practice. This module presents information as a basis for nurses to look into connections for their nursing practice issues. This module also provides resources that show direct connections between patient care outcomes and quality of nursing care. This information will be helpful for the learner as they continue to work on their final project with the completion of Milestone Two.
This is what my instructor posted:
Legal Concerns and Nursing Practice Issues
Legal issues are common in healthcare, and the nursing profession has its own share of legal concerns. Many of the legal issues that nurses encounter are centered on patient care, such as refusal of treatment, informed consent, negligence, and privacy. Other legal problems may focus on the nursing scope of practice, licensure, and the state’s nurse practice act (RegisteredNursing.org, 2020). Nursing practice issues can often lead to legal problems. For example, patient care can suffer due to fatigue; lateral violence can lead to a lack of concentration, which can then lead to medication errors; burnout can lead to inadequate coping mechanisms such as drinking excessive alcohol, which can lead to criminal punishment; and inappropriate staffing can lead to negligence of patient care. These are just some of the examples of legal repercussions that stem from nursing practice issues. Nurses need to be able to make the connections between nursing practice issues and legal consequences that can occur, then they need to be able to defend their license (“Nurse Spotlight,” 2019).
Nursing Practice Issues Impact on Healthcare Outcomes
Many nurse practice issues are associated with the work environment. A safe and healthy work environment directly affects patient care and patient care outcomes. Some of the characteristics of a safe and healthy work environment include professional autonomy, supportive management, adequate resources, and workload and skill-mix concordance (Copanitsanou et al., 2017). Nursing practice that is negatively affected by practice issues may lead to missed care and patient harm (Recio-Saucedo et al., 2018). It is important to understand and assess the ripple effect of nursing practice issues on healthcare outcomes.
This milestone assignment focuses on the impact of various aspects of healthcare on your chosen professional nursing practice issue. You will continue to use the issue that you chose in Milestone One.
