There are three assignments within this broader project that are meant to guide you through the writing process. Each of these earlier assignments will be graded as C/NC. For the final paper you will choose a novel and/or a film written by an African writer and analyze how the idea of race emerges in the piece through the conceptual frameworks that we will discuss in class. Extending this assignment over time will also give you a chance to identify a novel/film well in advance of the first assignment. We will also be able to work with the African studies library in this regard.
Students will be guided through the research and writing process. Each will choose their own individual research project in consultation with the professor. Papers must draw on cases drawn from the themes covered in class. Appropriate sources will also be discussed throughout the semester as students develop their papers.
