1. Goal: Using theories of socio-environmental management, critically assess a sectoral policy issue in the Global
South.
1. Select relevant sectoral policy (e.g., food, health, transport, energy) in a Global South country (e.g.,
Mexico, Philippines)
2. Explain current environmental problem related to the sectoral policy (e.g., the energy security strategy in
country X aims to increase electricity production through further construction of power plants; such
energy policy increases GHG emissions. This directly affects planetary boundaries on climate change).
Include an explanation of the limitations and gaps of current policies to address the issue.
3. Identify and assess the appropriateness of three policy alternatives. First, identify policy measures that
could be implemented in this country (e.g., a market-based approach such as a cap & trade for electricity
generation). Second, assess the feasibility of the proposed alternatives and select the best one.
Tip 1: You can identify policy alternatives based on the socio-environmental theories you are learning in
class, or by researching policy measures taken in other countries.
Tip 2: For the feasibility analysis, consider three criteria (e.g., costs, availability of technology, political
support, social acceptability, sustainability) that you can use to compare the three policy alternatives.
