Case Study
Mrs. Albertson is an 88-year-old widowed woman who is a breast cancer survivor, and has chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) after years of smoking, and severe arthritis. She has some beginning signs of dementia, but these are very mild. She is having more difficulty with her arthritis and has trouble bathing and dressing. She also has difficulty getting up from a chair and transferring to a wheelchair.
Mrs. Albertson has Social Security. Her Medicare is her primary insurance, and when her medical bills have reached a certain amount, she qualifies for a Medicaid “spend-down.” She currently lives alone in a large home that she can no longer maintain. She has a daughter who is married with three teenage daughters and who works full-time.
Last week, Mrs. Albertson fell at home and fractured her shoulder. She lay on the kitchen floor all day until her daughter stopped by on her way home from work to check on her, as she always does. It is clear that Mrs. Albertson can no longer live alone.
