To be attuned to the current social issues involving children, each student will be expected to make a written report in the form of a letter to a judge, a congress man, the governor, etc., on a current social issue which you find particularly interesting. It can be related to a topic in this course or different from those issues we will be covering in this course. Use your sociological imagination to consider an issue which is important to you from a social, rather than psychological perspective. In other words, you must remember that this written presentation is about the societal aspects of your issue. Finished Letter with Bibliography: Students should have an attached bibliography listing both the mass media and the scholarly sources they will be using based on research and used as a basis for their letter. There is no minimum number of sources, but it is expected that students will have at least 3. The Paper should be at least 4 pages. Pictures or any other attachments can be included, but cannot counted to make the 4 page requirement. The reporter should be prepared to address questions from the class or from the instructor on the specific topic. Please see the Rubrics used for grading Research Papers under Rubrics Section. A few of the areas your report might include could be: What is the problem presented? Why did you choose this issue? Why do you find it of particular importance? Why is this a Social Issue? How is that presently playing out? What makes this issue particularly topical? What are the myths and misconceptions regarding this issue? What are the potential solutions to this problem? What prevents them from being implemented? For eg.: Should child obesity be considered as child neglect? What intervention is necessary to address this issue and answer each of the above questions. Should an obese child be protected from being placed in foster care? Or should he/she protected and removed from his parent for not controlling his diet? What role school and society should play in advocating for this child? How can you help this child by advocating for his mental and physical well-being?
