Answer this question: To what extent does the U.S. judicial system exhibit the qualities of justice and fairness?
Justice is considered to be the procedures leading to proper or appropriate judicial outcomes e.g. a convict receiving a fair sentence for a given crime. We may all have different understandings of what is an appropriate outcome. What may be appropriate in one culture may be entirely inappropriate in another. Fairness is considered the procedures leading to equality of treatment. Put another way, whatever our definition of justice is, all people have equal access or opportunity to obtain that justice.
When completing your paper, you should include the following things:
1. Introduction that defines justice and fairness as they relate to the US judicial system
2. A discussion, including examples from the readings, of how the system is designed to produce outcomes that are just and fair
3. A discussion, including examples from the readings, of how the design of the US judicial system inhibits justice and fairness
4. A discussion, including examples from the readings, of whether the US justice system is just and fair or not
5. A discussion of two potential reforms that would make the US judicial system more just or more fair.
You should include at least 7 sources, at least 4 of these sources must be academic sources that are not from the course materials. The textbook counts as one source. The other three sources may be a popular source e.g. a news article. The popular sources may only be used in the discussion of the potential reforms to the justice system.
