Intro/methods and materials Lab report

You should be writing your assignments as if they were for a paper for publication in a peer-reviewed scientific journal. Do not write it as a BIO 1201 laboratory report. Write it as you would if it were an original research experiment that you performed on your own, and you are submitting it for publication in a scientific journal.
BASED ON CELL METABOLISM.
It is very important that you read some scientific papers before you try to write one. You cannot possibly expect to write a paper in the scientific format and style until you have read some published papers! You have been given some examples of peer-reviewed published research papers in class and you will be finding your own to be used as references in your paper. Pay attention to the tone, style, and format, and then try to emulate it in your paper.

A scientific paper consists of the following:
Report Component Description
Title
Should be less than ten words and reflect the factual content of the paper. Scientific titles are not designed to catch the reader’s fancy or to be provocative. A good title is straightforward and uses keywords that researchers in a particular field will recognize and find during a literature search.
Abstract

The purpose of the abstract is to allow the reader to judge whether it would serve his/her/their purpose to read the entire report. A good abstract is a concise (100 to 200 words) summary of the purpose of the report, what was found, and the author’s major conclusions. The abstract usually does not include citations to the literature nor any specific data or statistical information.
Introduction

Provides context and defines the subject of the report. Organize your introduction so that it begins broadly, but it gradually narrows until it ends with very specific information about what you did and your findings. The introduction should give the reader sufficient background to understand the rest of the report. There should be at least three paragraphs organized as follows:
(1) Begin by imparting some general back ground information to put your study into context. However, care should be taken to limit the background to whatever is pertinent to the experiment. Unless it is general knowledge, be sure to cite your source(s).
(2) Briefly summarize relevant published work by other researchers (include citations) to show how the literature relates to your specific study question.
(3) Ultimately, you should state your specific hypothesis/scientific question and how it was tested. Briefly, in only one or two sentences, explain the basic experimental design. Finally, summarize your findings in one or two sentences.
The introduction should go from broad to narrow. It should be organized so that you start out with general background information that will help put your paper into context. The middle should bring in relevant research that has been done by other researchers. The end of the Introduction should briefly explain specifically what you did, your hypothesis, and findings.
Materials and Methods –
As the name implies, the materials and methods used in the experiment should be reported here. The difficulty in writing this section is to provide enough detail for the reader to understand the experiment without overwhelming him or her. You must describe any special pieces of equipment, procedures and general reasoning of the assays used. This can usually be done in a short paragraph or two. Generally, this section attempts to answer the following questions:
o What materials were used? (Do not use a list of materials. Report what you used in narrative form as you describe procedures.)
o How were they used? (Explain how materials and equipment was used in enough detail that another person with basic scientific background, but no prior knowledge of the experiment, could replicate your work.)
o What statistical tests were used to analyze your data?
PLEASE DO ALL THAT IS LISTED HERE.
