Essay #2 – Literary Analysis Essay – Rough Draft
“The Boogeyman” is a short story by Stephen King, published in King’s 1978 collection Night Shift. “ The Boogeyman’ by Stephen King tells the story of Lester Billing, who is at his first therapy session with Dr. Harper, in which he accounts for the way his three children have died and the fact that he feels guilty for their death. According to Billings, his children were killed by the Boogeyman.
Stephen King utilizes Flashbacks, imagery, and Personification, to further exemplify the terrifying world of horror. It is difficult to find one simple answer for this – but you can say horror is all the literature and filters whose purpose is to scare. Boogeyman by Stephen Kings is a horror story, it is one of the fears you have in your imagination and should explain many of your fears. King intended to express his thoughts on why the boogeyman tales- like keep us from misbehaving and being naughty as young, and he aims to entertain the audience with a chilling story. Stephen Kinds just talk about one monster that follows Lester and his children and ends up killing them. Boogeyman is fear, Stephen King illustrates how fear can drive you crazy like what happened to Lester Billing.
However, at the beginning of the story, it shows that the main character (Lester Billing) is an abusive person, he maltreated his sons and wife, and he sees himself as superior to his wife, and he ought to be aggressive and violent if she provides him in any way. This violent nature of his can also be seen in his upbringing of his children. Lester is a very obstinate man controlled by pride and honor, and he does not respect his wife (Rita) and the marriage does not seem to be a happy ending. He (Lester Billings) believes that his discussion and methods are the right ones. In conclusion, Lester Billing is not a soft family-oriented person. When Lester Billing found somebody to talk to about everything in his mind, he tells everything to a psychiatrist named Dr. Harper. Lester Billing is getting paranoid and believes that there is a monster in the closet. Kings is telling this spooky tale by explaining how Lester Billings was traumatized because of the Boogeyman. Boogeyman represents Lester’s fear of being the father who gives his children a bad upbringing, and he takes everything away from Lester from his dignity to his family. Boogeyman is not traditionally a human, though he is born from human imagination and desire for thrills, and a child is not yet exposed to enough evils, and children are vulnerable in his/her ignorance of adult human behavior. The Boogeyman, suggests that even though it may be scary, you need to overcome your fear. Most fears are in your head and are psyching you out and some even are imaginary but are used to scare you. Only children have the innocent imagination to believe that the boogeyman is exist because they are not yet members of the ‘reasonable tribe’ of humanity. Some say that the Boogeyman is, a creature from another void or reality that likes to jump into ours to cause chaos. He feeds on fear and can gain power from the fear, that’s how he can cross over into our realm. The bogeyman is a figure with no specific image. He was created to keep children quiet at night. He is said to hide under the bed & in the closets, and he comes out & scares children when they are asleep. The bogeyman is known to hide & scare kids in many different places he may be scratching at your window, or hiding in your house somewhere. He was also created to take children away if they were being bad. The parents created him to make their children behave. The boogeyman is said to take the form of children’s worst fear. The Boogeyman serves up an equal portion of scary goodness and desperate hope. It brings a burst of gooseflesh. The Boogeyman is an incredible thriller that preys on every parent’s fear–that the child you created, raised, loved, and nurtured in your heart is never coming home again. The Boogeyman skillfully weaves layer and layer of evil and hearts topping terror into a book that would do Stephen King proud. Boogeyman was every parent’s nightmare.
Furthermore, the ending of this story is symbolizing the victory of traumatizing, and anxiety. Boogeyman lives in our subconscious mind; it lives in children’s minds in their fantasy. Small children are the most sensitive about fear The boogeyman is maybe a shapeshifter of some sort that can turn into your worst nightmare, then again, I am quite sure the boogeyman knows everyone’s worst fears that most people have, for example, demons and ghosts can turn into them to scare people. A very sinister creepy mind-bending tale. That popular childhood fear is perfectly played out but with devastating consequences. I believe that this is some of King’s strongest, most emotionally raw prose to date, and the shrink-patient format made these much more pliable and engrossing. I presume the ending is a simple clue to the reader that suppressed the anxieties and frustration create these hidden Boogeyman that can scare us as well as others. Considers whether or not the short story Boogeyman is a perfect example of the horror genre. Describes the elements of a classic horror story. Illustrates how the story incorporates each element. This relates to the modern day because everyone is so quick to judge someone for their beliefs and their morals. When someone with different morals comes up, they are automatically classified as a bad person just because they were raised differently. They could try to be the best person they could be, but their image of the best person could be different from yours. it doesn’t mean they’re a bad person.
