Uploaded is an example of how the concept map should look like.
INTRODUCTION
In Chapter 12, Wright and Rogers outline three broadly accepted approaches to defining social class and class structure in the U.S. today. As you become familiar with each approach, you’ll begin to see it manifest in many places from social media and the news, to school board meetings, and federal policies.
This chapter also marks a shift away from how capitalism applies to different sectors of the economy (i.e. health, consumption, environment, etc.). Instead, we are looking at how capitalism generates and perpetuates economic inequality and inequity to answer this question: Why, in the world’s largest economy, do we also have the largest gap between rich and poor?
The main objective for this assignment is to demonstrate your grasp of the core concepts in this chapter. I will assess your work by accuracy, completeness, and critical thinking.
Before you begin creating your map in CANVA, here are some preliminary steps:
• View the slides & videos inside the “HOW TO SLIDES & VIDEOS” FOLDER
• Pencil out a rough draft of what you want your map to include before you select a template on Canva. This way you will find something that best meets your need rather than trying to fit your needs into a template.
• Review the content requirements below to make sure you have addressed them all.
MAP CONTENT REQUIREMENTS
Identify your central topic. It must be substantive and cannot be simply “Map #3”.
Think of a few words that summarize the authors’ argument in this chapter.
Define fully each of approach to social class discussed in the Chapter (and listed below).
Provide an example of core concept for each approach. Explain how this concept shapes social class.
Explain which approach you prefer and why. What does it do that the other approaches do not?
Images must be original! Do not copy/paste or replicate the pyramids used in my slides. Come up with an original image.
List of Approaches to Social Class You Must Include in your Map
1) Personal Attributes & Material Conditions
2) Opportunity Hoarding
3) Exploitation & Domination
4) Social Structure (Wright & Rogers)
5) Your preference
LAYOUT
You are free to layout the map as you choose, that is easy to follow and interpret. However, CANVA templates typically show only two layers of information: the central topic and then branches to one additional layer of shapes, such as boxes or circles. For your map, add in a third layer where you present an example that illustrates your understanding of each concept.
