“The Lottery” is filled with symbols. This story is in many ways a parable more than a traditional story. Jackson describes a society so mired in its traditions that it has lost the ability to even look at the reasons for those traditions, but instead follows them blindly even when they hurt its citizens. Write an essay discussing the use of symbols in this story.
REQUIREMENTS
Essay should be a 700 – 1000 words.
Essay should include 4 different academic sources, two of which MUST come from the FSW library databases.
Essay MUST NOT include literary study guides are sources cited. These sources are a substitute for thinking and are not an academic source for college essays.
Essay MUST NOT use wiki sources as academic reference, as well as avoid other non-academic references (e.g., blogs, history channel, etc.).
Essay should include a minimum of 6-8 citations within the text. These should be direct quotes followed by in-text parenthetical citations.
Essay MUST contain quotes from the primary source (e.g., poem, short story, etc.). Remember: it’s a literature class, so use the literature!
