Students will compose an essay practicing skills of analysis and critical thinking, as well as beginning to write with and about outside sources. Students will find two authors who argue for opposite sides of a controversial issue. Then they will formulate an essay which accurately describes each authors position and compares and contrasts them. The goal is to be journalistic; to characterize the discussion with an honest portrayal of positions, and then analyze them through comparison. The student’s preference for either position should not be expressed in any fashion. The essay should be no less than 3 pages in length, use appropriate in-text citation, and follow MLA style guidelines. It should also have an additional Works Cited page beyond the 3 pages of text.
