growth of urbanization and the rise of the labor movement. Explore and analysis these
two elements which changed the fabric of American society.
o Discuss the rise of the labor movement in late 19th century America. What were
the reasons for the formation of labor unions? What were the major gains and
setbacks experienced by the movement? Cite examples using leaders and
organizations involved in labor issues of the period.
o Describe the explosive growth of urbanization in the late nineteenth century.
What factors led to this growth, and what were the results, both positive and
negative of this growth? Be sure to include examples from the primary source

o Among the responses to urbanization was the rise of the social gospel and
settlement houses. Describe each of these, showing what problems each tried to
