What makes communications management so important in diverse workgroups?
In Chapter 6 Stakeholder Analysis and Communications Planning, I became interested in the communications process and how important it was to get this right in project management. The PMI references communication as the “Lifeblood” of the success of a project. As I got deeper into this, the PMI discusses that many workgroups are now very diverse and may be located all over the world. Many come from many different cultures and have different life experiences. It states that communicating among diverse workgroups is a business issue, and it’s important to recognize and understand the backgrounds and difference of who you are communicating with. Have an open mind and to be respectful!

Do matrix organizational structures tend to focus one style more than the other?
In matrix organizational structures team members inherently have “two-bosses.” Does either boss take precedence over the other? In a perfect world, they do not. However, in some cases team members have closer ties to the project or functional manager. In these instances they seek out decisions from that boss more often. This does not mean that one manager has more authority than the other. This is one of the disadvantages of a matrix organizational structure, is that it can be very complex and difficult to not have conflicting ideas. Collaboration and cooperation are key functions of a successful matrix structure. The project and functional manager must both understand their purpose of the project and seek to provide resources to the other when needed.
