Explore how your cultural influences have (or Haven’t) affected your identity, habits, opinions, experiences, and life choices, including you’re decision to seek a career in psychology. Discuss how your specific sociocultural history and experiences present and advantages and potential challenges to therapeutic work, and ways in which you currently balance and manifest your own sociocultural background in your work as a therapist( or future therapist). The activities in Culturally Alert Counseling may be helpful.
(I am a 23 year old Asian Chinese who came to the United States at the age of 15 to attend high school in Los Angeles. I have met many classmates from different countries along the way. My mother is a strict person and is very focused on my moral education and social development. My mother used to be an accountant and since the birth of my own sister, she has become a full-time homemaker. My father works as an executive in a cell phone company. The family relies on him for financial income. In the background that counseling in China is not as well developed as in the United States, the counseling market became popular after the epidemic. So more and more people started to focus on mental health, especially teenagers’ psychological problems. Because China’s education is very competitive, many kids will commit suicide during the college entrance exams because of the stress. I may want to focus on adolescent counseling in the future and return to my home country to help adolescents in difficulty.I had an internship in a counseling company in China for three months, but it was all simple tasks, such as helping clients arrange appointments, helping them fill out personal information forms, organizing documents and answering phones. So I hope I can find a related internship in the US after graduation and compare the differences and expertise of counseling in both countries.)
