Write a 1,000-1,700 word paper in which you define an issue in Social and Ethical Issues in Sports. Define and explain the problems and issues raised. Don’t make an argument. Your paper should take a balanced approach—some of your information should show one side of the issue and some of your information should show the other side of the issue. For example, if you were to write about running up the score in sports, you would set forth both sides of the issue. You would research information that would show that running up the score is bad because it’s embarrassing to the other team, and you would research information that would show that running up the score is just part of the game.
STAY IN THE THIRD PERSON. DON’T SAY I. DON’T RELATE YOUR PERSONAL CONNECTION TO THE ISSUE.
Don’t give your opinion and don’t make an argument.
The rough draft is due in two weeks on Tuesday, February 21, and the final version is due on Tuesday, February 28.
Do a different topic than you did for Assignment 1.
I’m requiring that you cite at least 10 separate sources in your paper. You can cite books, academic journals, magazines, newspapers, encyclopedias (not Wikipedia) and well known websites, such as ESPN.com, Salon.com, or CNN.com. Avoid sites like SB Nation and Bleacher Report. Also avoid the Opposing Viewpoints publications. Try to have a mix of academic sources and sources written for the general public. Also, don’t cite the handout articles that I emailed to you; do your own research. In addition, I’m requiring that you get at least one quote from at least one expert, such as a coach or athletic director, to help define and explain the issue.
Make sure to pick an issue in which there are at least two sides or opposing viewpoints to the issue, such as whether hockey should allow fighting vs. hockey should ban fighting. The issue should be a matter of some public concern in which there is disagreement. Explain the issue so as to produce greater clarity about its dimensions and complexity—causes, consequences, implications, different people involved, varying perspectives, and key terms involved. Write your paper as though you are explaining to someone why he or she should be concerned about the issue. Clearly define the nature of the problem so that the reader understands why it is such a problem. Give some history and background about the issue.
Make it clear what the two (or more) sides in the issue are. Who cares about the issue and why do they care? Explain the various perspectives and disagreements among people involved in the issue. What are the causes, symptoms, parts, and consequences of the issue? Explain the difficulty of taking action. Who suffers from the problem? Who gains? What is the heart of the problem? When and where does the problem occur? Why does the problem occur and how does the problem unfold?
Possible topics could include, but are not limited to: Steroid use, fighting in hockey, running up the score, whether college athletes should be paid, recruiting violations and sanctions, academic eligibility, whether the Olympics are too political, pressures in youth sports, boys playing on girls teams and girls playing on boys teams, the mercy rule in sports, concussions and playing hurt, hazing of high school athletes, whether coaches who violate NCAA rules should be punished in addition to the school, whether boxing or UFC should be banned, and whether Title IX, related to women’s sports, is a good thing. Contact me if you want to do a different topic.
