The Ottoman empire was one of the largest and most powerful empires in world-history. What explains its strength and longevity? Consider economic, religious, military, (geo-)political, social, and cultural factors. What led to its eventual downfall?
Draw on class, readings (Keddie, Faroqhi, Kayali, and Mango), discussions, and presentations- ONLY! No outside research! In other words, you need to demonstrate that you have understood and engaged with what we cover together.
Include a clearly-stated thesis. I recommend the following format: “In this paper I argue that the Ottoman empire lasted for seven centuries due to…” Or: “It is the main argument of this paper that Ottoman longevity was the result of…” [Don’t use these examples verbatim!]
