Task 1: Essay Analysis
You will read the essay Why We Crave Horror Movies by Stephen King. After
reading the essay:
1. Identify the hook and thesis statement of the essay.
2. How does the author support his thesis statement throughout the essay?
Do you find these arguments effective?
3. Identify the literary devices used throughout the essay (for example:
similes, metaphors, rhetorical questions, etc.…). After identifying all of the
literary devices in the essay, what impact do you believe these devices
had on the reader’s understanding of the essay?

Task 2: Narrative Essay
You will write a written account of a true story about something significant in
in your life. This narrative essay needs to be 400-700 words in length.
Since this is a story, the narrative essay needs to include everything a story
needs, such as:
• Plot
• A theme or thesis
• Characters
• A conflict or problem
• A climax
• A voice
IMPORTANT NOTES
-First task does not have word limit and does not need to be too long
-Narrative essay can be anything for me as long as it is a realistic story for a high school student.
