Discussion Prompt:
This module’s focus is on thesis statements and the discussion about Amy Chua’s idea of Eastern parenting that she refers to as “Tiger Mom” parenting. Her stance caused a lot of controversy when it was first released. As you read the various reading assignments and watched the video about Tiger, Lion, and Dolphin, parenting, you surely formed an opinion. Since the discussion board is not the finished essay, feel free to engage with the other students using first person pronouns. Give personal examples, as long as you feel comfortable doing so, and discuss Chua’s strategies. This discussion will be the start of Essay 2.
1.) In your first paragraph, plainly state your agreement or disagreement with Chua’s parenting practices. Do this in one sentence. By doing this, you will have a working thesis. It does not have to be perfect at all. Remember, we are brainstorming. After you have stated your thesis, spend the rest of the paragraph explaining, in your own words, why you agree or disagree with her parenting style.
2.) Discuss specific examples of what you think works or does not work about Chua’s style. There is a lot of material to work with in the Learning Activities.
3.) In your last paragraph, take one of Chua’s specific examples of her parenting of her daughters. Answer this question: What should she have done differently, if anything? Explain.
4. How do you feel about their opinion? Does it compare to yours? Explain.
In the second paragraph, explore the Chua example they chose. Do you agree with their stance? Why or why not? Can you possibly find common ground with their response? Explain.
