LibGuides

There is a wonderful resource available for you through our campus library called a “libguide”. Please go to the Libguide and read the NPR Blog called “What Makes a Great Teacher”. You can also google search NPR Blog called “What Makes a Great Teacher”. Also click around on that page and read some of the other links.
National Association for the Education of Young Children

Finally, review the NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct (we will come back to this in the future).

After you have read chapter three, the Preschool Guidelines, the Code, and the blog, come back here and describe at least two qualities that you feel are most important to being a good teacher. Be sure you cite your sources. Come back by Saturday and reply to a peer who chose different qualities than you did. Did they change your mind or do you stand by your choices? Defend your answers.

See my sample post below to understand what I mean by citing your sources:

“After reading all of the source material, I am convinced that there are two vital qualities to being a good teacher. The first quality necessary is a deep respect for children and families. “In early childhood education it is not necessary (or possible) to love every child, but it is imperative that early childhood educators respect the worth and value of every child and family member” (p. 9, Feeney, Moravcik, & Nolte, 2016). The teachers I remember most were those who respected me and the rest of the students in my classes as individuals and treated us all with care. I can remember my high school French teacher taking us all to Quebec for a field trip. She knew that most of us could not afford such a trip and so wrote a grant and created fund-raiser activities so that every child who wanted to go could attend. She was often tough on us, but she was respectful in all she said and did.
I think that a second quality that is important to being a good teacher is being reflective. According to the California Preschool Program Guidelines, (p. 46) “Teachers are also attentive to the influence of their behavior and other adults’ behavior on the children.” I think it is very important for teachers to be sure they always think about what their role is in every conflict or problem and how they can seek to overcome that problem. Reflection is very important to understanding the children and understanding oneself.

(Be sure you don’t use either of these in your post or you will lose points!!!)
