This popular movie had such an impact on audiences, that motels suffered severe loss of business when PSYCHO was initially released (due, mostly, to the shower sequence)! In your opinion, how much of a role does music and sound play in the effectiveness of scenes depicting suspense in this film? Did you personally enjoy this movie? Why or why not? (4 points)
4) In a 2017 review of LADY BIRD, the critic says: “Her film manages to feel like an indie dramedy but powers along like a mainstream film. Part of that comes from how Director, Greta Gerwig, has colored in her supporting characters with marvelous quirks and telling details while showing exceptional taste in casting.” Do you agree with this observation? Explain, discussing at least three (3) supporting characters. (3 points)
5) Released in 2000, CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON quickly became a surprise international success, both financially and critically. It won Oscars for Best Foreign Language Film, Art Direction, Original Musical Score and Cinematography. Twenty years later, PARASITE became the first non-English language movie to win an Academy Award for Best Picture. It also won Oscars for Best Director, Original Screenplay and International Feature. In your opinion, do these movies deserve these accolades? Discuss the Academy Award-winning categories of each in your analysis of these films’ cross-cultural appeal.
6) Describe at least three (3) scenes from the multi award-winning FORREST GUMP that you find particularly impressive in their use of visual and/or sound effects (including music). How do you feel about its acting? Do you think this hit film earned critical praise and popular success due mostly to its new digital effects, or because its characters were emotionally moving, or because its story was compelling, or due to all of these components?
