After reading REVEL Chapter 10 on Emotional and Social Development in Early Childhood, identify the four different types of parenting styles.
Think about and identify what type of parenting style your parents used with you as a young child.
If you were raised by two parents, did they each have a different parenting style? How did this affect the way you responded to them? At what age do you think you figured out that your parents might have different answers to the same question (for example: “Mom, can I have a cookie?” versus “Dad, can I have a cookie?”)
If you were raised by a single parent, did your parent become stricter to compensate for a missing parent, or did they become more lenient or permissive?
How will your experiences with your own parents affect the way you parent? If you are already a parent, how do you parent differently from your own parents? Is this deliberate, or does it feel automatic? How much thinking goes into your own parenting style?
