Your goal is to conduct a community needs and assets* assessment with respect to food justice/security/sovereignty** issues and to document the food environment in your community in the form of an annotated photovoice project. Your project plan provides you the opportunity to outline how you will accomplish your goal. Please complete the following three tasks for this project plan:
(1) Identify your community. It can be the neighborhood (or campus) where you live or work; it should be the neighborhood you spend significant time in so that you can take time to conduct observational research of the area.
(2) Identify key indicators in your community. These indicators MUST include (but are not limited to) the following: (a) poverty/income data; (b) racial and ethnic demographics; (c) age demographics; (d) two
(2) key health-related indicators, which might be the community’s obesity rates, heart disease rates, exercise rates, or number of food establishments (which could be supermarkets, fast food establishments, bodegas/corner stores/delis, farmers markets, gas stations/convenience stores, etc.). A good source for data is city-data.com.
(3) Indicate your plan for touring and mapping your community’s food-related needs and assets. Keep in mind these key food justice issues: price/affordability, accessibility, nutritional value, workers’ rights, food availability, populations served, etc. Be specific on details related to HOW you will document these needs and assets: You should use direct observation through tours of the community – don’t forget to mention that you will be taking photos.
NOTE: Your health and safety is paramount during this pandemic. Please do not take any actions that you feel put you or the people you live with at risk. According to current safety guidelines, you can safely tour or walk your community if you wear protective face coverings, maintain physical distance from others (at least 6 feet) and avoid any large crowds of people.
* Needs and assets: Needs refer to weaknesses or shortcomings, things you can identify your community would need in order to better achieve food justice; assets refer to strengths, things you can identify in your community that are already present and available to help achieve food justice.
