In this writing assignment, you will need to think more deeply about why people are poor. Why do we have poverty in our society, and are there any solutions to poverty?
The paper should include the following:
-A definition of poverty with a distinction between absolute poverty and relative poverty
-A summary of the two main theories of the cause of poverty (individual cause vs. structural cause
-Which theory do you agree with and why? What flaws (if any) do you see with the theories?
-Do you think either theory leads to solutions to poverty? What might a solution look like?
Use research and current events to support your ideas. Make sure to cite your sources and have a reference page with all sources listed. Do NOT just copy and paste a hyperlink. A citation must be given, with the author, publication date, etc. Make sure to add in-text citations as well. Whether you are quoting an article or using an idea that you found in an article in your own words, an in-text citation must follow (ex., author, date of publication). Every source you use should be on the reference page and cited within the paper. This paper should be 2-4 pages (double-spaced).
It should have the following structure.
-Introduction: Introduce your topic by defining poverty and explaining the difference between relative and absolute. State your thesis of why you think people are poor. (1-2 paragraphs)
-Body: Support your thesis with research. Make sure to summarize the two main theories of why people are poor (individual cause vs. structural cause. Develop your arguments and assertions using research. Be sure to identify the sources of your information or ideas using a standard citation method. (3-6 paragraphs)
-Conclusion: Summarize the research, your opinion, and the analysis presented in the paper, and discuss your recommendations and conclusions. (1-3 paragraphs)
Credit the Sources of Information and Ideas: Use in-text citations and include a reference page listing the articles you have cited in your paper. Every source you use should be cited in your text and listed in your references. The reference page does not count as one of your pages. This paper will be checked for plagiarism, so do your own work and cite your sources.
