-To prepare for this paper, you will first play the role of a sociologist in the field, observing and recording your impressions of other people engaging in digital culture. As with the first micro–paper, you’ll want to record your data in a designated notebook.
-Here are some approaches to consider:
Home environment: How are other members of your family engaging in digital culture? Describe what their immersion looks like. Create small, well-detailed portraits of these family members in the act of digital immersion. How is it different between age groups (parents, younger siblings)?
Friends: How are your friends engaging in digital culture? Describe what this looks like–paint the scene.
School: What do you observe in the school environment? Break your observation into two categories: A)Inside the classroom: what are students doing while waiting for class to begin? Are they engaging in digital habits while the class is in session? B) Outside the classroom: what are students doing (digitally) in the hallways, waiting for their next class? What are they doing In the cafeteria? In the library?
Work: How are your work colleagues engaging in digital culture (outside of what is necessary for the job). What do they do during breaks?
Community: What do you observe as you move about in your community (grocery store, coffee shops, bank, restaurants, parks, etc.)? Do you see people engaged while they’re driving?
-Like the Digital Fast micro-paper, you will not want to skimp on detail and material. Try not to fall into the habit of recording a few brief, vague sentences, and telling yourself that you’ll fill out the scene later (as many writers have discovered, when “later” arrives, the scene is no longer vivid in their minds).
-The rhetorical style of this essay is also informal: first-person, personal, conversational. Your primary rhetorical strategy will be powerful description: precise, sensory detail to create memorable, evocative portraits of people engaged in digital behaviors.
Again, I want to remind you that this is considered a well-developed, complete first draft, and you will receive feedback for improvement for the final paper.
