– In the theoretical framework developed by Karl Marx, workers produce all the value in a capitalist economy (the labor theory of value) but receive less than they produce, as explained in our readings on the Marxist system, including Sackrey et al, Ch. 4; Marx and Engels, The Communist Manifesto ( Moodle); Bowles et al, Ch. 4; and Marx, “Estranged Labor” (Moodle). Using two or more of these readings, examine the argument that workers are exploited and commodified. Please do not use outside readings for this essay.
-Your task in this first formal paper for our course is to respond to one of the above questions with a well-written argument. As noted above, you will need a strong and unambiguous thesis statement, supported by evidence gleaned from your reading of the text. Structure your thesis to support the argument you will make, and make sure the thesis addressesthe questions above.
Your writing should include a clear debatable thesis and brief introduction as well as a brief conclusion. Each paragraph should include a claim (a thesis for that paragraph, in effect), supported by evidence from the book. Please avoid the use of excessively long quotes and please try to summarize where possible. You can make good use of short quotes that support your argument.
This essay should be 800 to 850 words in length. Given that this paper is relatively short, you will want to think carefully about organization and concision. Don’t use evidence that is not in our readings and avoid repetition. Ideally, every piece of your writing should support your argument.
-Other general advice: You may use any citation style that you prefer, but please do include citations for any direct quotes and a list of citations at the end.
You will submit your paper, by the deadline indicated above, via our course Moodle page. Your paper will be analyzed with the Turnitin plagiarism detection software. This software compares your work with the work of others, as well as material posted on the Internet and elsewhere.
