The focused observation this week is on Cognitive Development. This includes math, science, and language. You will be viewing at least three of the Preschool video clips to discover how these kinds of development are supported and encouraged.
Step 1: Select a video from below and read the video background and transcriipt.
Step 2: Watch the video and record your observations using a running record approach. You may need to view the video more than once to do so.
Step 3: Explore additional information from the California Preschool Curriculum Framework and/or the
California Preschool Learning Foundations. by clicking on the links below each of the videos. Look at the specific corresponding Guiding Principles and/or strategies given in the area.
Support your observation with actual dialog and specific task descriiptions. What evidence of Piaget’s theories did you observe? What evidence of Vygotsky’s theories did you observe? Be explicit and include supporting statements for each of your findings from your course readings.
Discuss what you learned about the children and the classroom from each of the video observations. Discuss what you discovered from the Curriculum Framework information linked to each video. What other strategies did you think of to support the experiences? Reflect on the viewing experience and discuss what you have observed, your conclusions, and how you can communicate the observation and strategies to colleagues, parents, and other stakeholders. Discuss how this relates to your work in the Program so far.
