Ventilator-associated pneumonia is a common problem faced in healthcare and can be associated to increased costs of healthcare stays and higher rates of morbidity and mortality.
Two solutions to combat ventilator associated pneumonia and to decrease healthcare costs and improve patient outcomes that have become a regular aspect of care in the ICU have been 1.) the routine performance of oral care and subglottic suctioning, and 2.) the daily interruption of sedation and analgesic use to wake the patient and assess weaning from a mechanical ventilator.
