Write a self-reflection analysis between the case of a social worker and a women who experiences anxiety, takes care of her sick mother, her sister struggles with substance abuse and her husband is irritable and complains about loosing his job to immigrants. Her daughter is dating a Black man and she feels concerned about her family’s reaction because her daughter wants to bring him to the Thanksgiving dinner.
The social worker has been working with this women for a while and during the session they discussed that she has to establish a conversation with her husband in regards of him helping around the house and talking to his co-workers to see if they have been able to find new job opportunities that they can recommend to him, since she cannot be the only provider for the whole family. The social worker acknowledge the patients feelings and anxiety and encourage her to set boundaries and care for herself, the social worker recommended resources such as home care services, CDPAP or affordable adult day care for her mom. The social worker recommended for her to have a conversation with her sister in order to let her know that she feels concerned and tired about the situation but that she still loves her and will always be there for her. Lastly, the social worker recommended that she met with her daughter and her boyfriend for lunch or coffee before thanksgiving in order for her to get to know him and reduce some of the anxiety about the whole family meeting him for the first time during thanksgiving.
Write the analysis from the social worker perspective
These are the questions:
For both experiences, what did you feel confident/less confident about as you entered each?
For both experiences, did you experience “triggers” related to any of your social identities/lived experiences? What might you do when/if this happens in a clinical setting during a post-MSW educational experience?
For both experiences, develop a brief “next steps” to include only two (2) of the following (the assessment, interventions & evaluation) using an anti-oppressive theoretical framework which also addresses the role of systems of oppressions, covered in this course such as anti-Black racism, white supremacy, heterosexism & patriarchy on the participant (client) & the challenge which may have led them to seek support.
For both experiences, what are your most salient learning moments?
