3. It has been argued that the power of the President has changed and expanded over time. Do you agree with this assessment? How do scholars explain this expansion in Presidential power? In your opinion, which is more important: the individual personal qualities possessed by a given President, or the institutional capabilities and constraints associated within which all Presidents must navigate? Why? Finally, Cronin and Genovese highlight several paradoxical expectations of the American president – identify at least three of these. What are the implications of these paradoxical expectations for the relationship between the President and the public?

7. In his book The Big Sort, Bill Bishop presents several key claims to explain why/how American are so politically divided. Identify at least two main claims put forth by Bishop. Then, identify and comment on the critique(s) offered by Abrams and Fiorina. With whom do you agree and why? What do these two readings offer us in evaluating partisanship in the United States? Are Americans more politically divided in 2022?
