Assignment Content
The first 5 years of a child’s life are critical because it is a time of rapid physical, cognitive, linguistic, social, and emotional development. By age 5, a child’s brain is about 90% developed.
Imagine this scenario: Your school is reaching out to your community’s new parents or parents of young children whose children may eventually attend your school. The outreach program is attempting to educate parents about children’s growth and development in the hopes that parents will better prepare their children for school.
To help educate parents, create a visual organizer (e.g., table, flowchart, diagram, etc.) of your choice that:
Displays and explains the physical, cognitive, language, social, and emotional developmental benchmarks and skills of infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and primary grade (K–3) children
Includes media or technological influences that may support each age group’s development
Develop a 1- to 2-page parent handout that:
Defines the role of early childhood educators for different ages and grade levels
Identifies and describe the potential factors that may affect child growth and development, including:
Cultural factors
Biological factors
Environmental factors, such as poverty, low socioeconomic status, poor nutrition, abuse, and violent or volatile households
Explains how parents’ understanding of child growth and development can help their children succeed in school
