The Neo-Confucian school (daoxue) served as a ‘modern’, self-consciously hybrid attempt to invigorate Confucianism as a philosophical tradition and to protect China against foreign invasion. Two of the great Neo-Confucian masters were Zhuxi and Wang Yangming, who lived centuries apart and disagreed on some fundamantal issues.
