Research information about the image and its artist. For example, for contextual criticism, you’ll need to understand the culture and times when the art was created. For expressive criticism, you can research the artist, his or her personality, and worldview. Use at least two scholarly sources. See the information below about these sources. If you unsure whether a source is scholarly, contact your professor to help you determine this.

5. Evaluate the selected work of art according to the three theories of art criticism: formal; contextual, and expressive. Be sure you thoroughly read the discussion of these theories in the textbook, Chapter Five: Evaluating Art. Write at least 200 words for each type of theory. Divide your paper into these headings: Introduction; Formal Theory; Contextual Theory; Expressive Theory; Conclusion.

6. Write a conclusion that includes your response to the work of art. Write at least 100 words.

7. For your researched material, be sure to include end notes and a source list (bibliography). See the information below.

8. Double check the deadline for this assignment.

Researching with Scholarly Sources

After choosing the creative work that interests you, explore information to help you meet the requirements of the assignment. You will need to research from scholarly sources. These sources include articles from scholarly journals, museums, books, art magazines, and articles by professors at reputable universities. Do not use Wikipedia, student papers, podcasts, personal journals, blogs, online comments, your textbook, and unqualified authors. Dig wide and deep.

JSTOR is a reliable source for scholarly articles.
