This research assignment is designed to give you the opportunity to go deeper into literary analysis and research. The assignment is to write a research paper on what the literature shows to be humane or inhumane about America past and present. Your essay should use the literature to show who or what is “in/humane” about America today as it relates to some other time in history. Write your paper on the topic of “Voice” and comparatively analyze Baldwin’s “Sonny’s Blues” with McCann’s “Til Human Voices Wake Us.”
Formulate a first paragraph and thesis that addresses the topic. The research paper should analyze what specific poems, essays, or short stories show about how human perspective, fairness, and/or voice has been effected by machines, viruses, environmental changes, and/or other factors . It should address how these things have either helped or hinder (or both) humanity.
Your draft should be approximately three to four pages with three to four sources in an MLA style Works Cited bibliography page.
The draft will not be as long as the final version of your research paper, which should be approximately six-seven pages and include six -seven sources referenced in MLA style. These sources should include literature from our course text and contain full bibliographic information. The draft should include at least three sources. Most of those sources should be the short story, poem, and/or course material your research paper will analyze. For all of the sources you will need to cite complete bibliographic information, including the author’s name and title of the literary work(s) as well as publication, date, name, and place.
The research paper thesis is the last sentence of the first paragraph. It should be an original objective argument. Be sure to cite your sources for every idea that is not your own, both when you quote an authors words and when you borrow his or her insights. In order to construct a thesis statement, or the paper’s main argument, ascertain the main argument of each course readings. Be sure to include information about the time period and context of the literature and course texts. The paper should state when the literary work was written, including specific time periods and dates
