Number your responses. Each response should be at least six sentences. Responses of less than six sentences will receive a zero. Your goal is to show a clear understanding of the assigned materials. Longer responses showing thoughtful analysis receive higher scores.

1. Does Douglass describe any instances of “slave resistance” in his writing? Why would you consider those instances resistance? What would Camp say about them?

2. In your own words, explain Camp’s thesis. How would you explain her article to someone else?

3. Who was Douglass’s audience? Look at when he wrote this and explain what his goals might have been in telling his story.

4. On pages 558-559, Camp argued that enslaved people used to dress to mark “on their bodies the difference between the time that belonged to the master and the time that was their own.” Why was this considered a power play, in Camp’s view? Does this symbolic use of clothing still happen with people today? If so, how?

5. Taken together, how do these two works add to your understanding of American history?
