Learning Experience Plan Assignment: Directions
In the early care and education classroom, we often have certain social or emotional issues that surface daily. This could be the child who is angry
or the one who is reserved and has very few friends. It could be that we
want to help children to understand that though in many ways we are
different, we are similar in many ways as well. These are just a few
examples, but I know you can think of many. We often use books to help
convey a particular social or emotional lesson.

For this assignment, I would like you to choose a children’s book with a topic that addresses a social or emotional issue such as hitting, sharing, friendship, similarities/differences, or any other issue that you feel needs support in your classroom. If you aren’t currently teaching, think of what might be happening and choose a topic of interest to you.

The book is your vehicle to support the need that the child(ren) has.
Using the Learning Experience Plan (LEP) template and resources content folder, create a learning experience to support the social/emotional
development of children.

-Pick an age group: Toddler or Preschool
-Choose a learning progression from the Social Emotional Early Learning
-Development Standards (the link is in the content folder).
-Choose a book you will read to the whole class, to a small group of
children, or it might be a one-on-one reading to a specific child.
-Create a learning experience that reinforces the important message(s) in the book.
For example, if the learning progression you chose is Play and Friendship and you read a book about friendship, then the learning experience might be making friendship collages. If the learning progression was Sense of Self, you might create a learning experience like looking in the mirror and identifying their specific attributes, hair color, eye color, skin tone, etc., and then drawing a picture of themselves.
