Respond to ONE of the following questions:
1. Consider ways in which Equiano’s perspective coincides with and even defies the ideas of the Enlightenment Era. Although he ultimately assimilates to European culture and society, his first hand accounts of his life as a slave are shocking. What aspect(s) of the slave trade seem to be particularly disturbing to him? Analyze a specific aspect of his observations for your response.
2. Analyze Equiano’s life before he and his sister were kidnapped from their native Africa. How does his African tribal life and culture compare to 18th century European culture? What is his perspective of his captors? Analyze and compare the two cultures as presented by Equiano. Is it surprising that Equiano chooses to assimilate to the culture of his enslavers? Why/Why not?
3. What were some of the strategies Equiano used to first attain his freedom, then later to be “accepted” as a British citizen? Consider his devotion to Christianity. Do you think that Equiano’s embrace of Christianity helped serve his purposes? Analyze his perspective and ultimate acceptance of Christianity for this response.
