Task 1
Select a major organization that was located in the Hurricane Katrina disaster area. Research their experiences and detail the unexpected challenges the organization encountered in returning their operations to normal. Give suggestions on what might be added to the organization’s contingency plan to mitigate those unexpected challenges.
Task 2
While society expects a business to be prepared for disasters and to recover using its own resources, we do not seem to expect individuals to be prepared to survive a disaster. Should we expect government at any level to be responsible for disaster recovery at either the personal or business level? Why or why not? What sacrifices would a business have to make if the disaster recovery process were turned over to a government agency?
Task 3
When a major U.S. city recognized that over 70% of its IT staff was eligible to retire within a three-year period, they immediately put into place a plan to start bringing in new IT staff and pairing them with the experienced veterans. Because their IT systems were almost exclusively developed in-house over 20 years, organizational IT knowledge was critical, and those required skills could not be obtained on the open market. Does this suggest another area that should be addressed in crisis management and contingency planning? In which plan or document should this issue have been addressed already?
