· Describe and summarize the article. Discuss the genre of the piece and what it says. To discuss genre, you can answer some narrower questions: where was the piece published (i.e. newspaper, blog site, company website, etc.); who wrote it (i.e. a journalist, a professor, a community activist, etc.); what was their aim or purpose in writing it (to inform/report, to argue, to promote, etc.). To explain what the author/article “says,” you should offer a clear and accurate summary of the piece. I recommend dedicating one full paragraph for a formal summary.
· Discuss credibility—in general, and of the piece under review. To do this, you can think about these questions: What is credibility? How can we know if a source is credible or trustworthy? How can we trust what we read? Is the piece under review believable and trustworthy? And how can we answer that? Is it something about the writer’s tone? Is it the fact that he/she tells us where the information is coming from?
· Discuss your personal connection with the topic and the article. Why is this topic interesting to you? How does your own background—upbringing, surroundings, values, etc.—shape what you are likely to trust? How does your personal perspective affect the way you think about the issue and the article under review?
Essay II, then, will involve breaking down the component questions above and attempting to answer them with the aid of research and the application of your own critical thinking skills. You can think of this first part as the research and preparation phase of the project. Once that prep work is done, you’ll have to organize your ideas around coherent, unified paragraphs, develop an interesting introduction with a clearly focused thesis, and reinforce your discussion points with a carefully constructed conclusion.
