During globalization in the US, many companies decided to find cheaper labor offshore to increase their profits. This resulted in less jobs in the US which decreased the purchasing power of people in the US. This is exactly what automation at Amazon is doing. Because many people are losing jobs to these machines that automate these jobs, the profits of the companies increase because they do not have to continue paying employees for their labor, and the purchasing power of these people decrease. Automation also leads to a larger wealth and income gap. The people who own Amazon that use automation will continue to increase their profits and increase productivity while everyone else loses wealth and buying power. Automation has increased globally throughout many companies due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Automation is important for Amazon because it will increase profits which according to Friedman’s doctrine, the only responsibility of a business is to maximize their profits. It may seem unethical because of the number of jobs lost, but their only job is to make money. The cons of automation include less purchasing power average, wider income/wealth gap, and less unskilled jobs which can in turn have a negative affect towards the Amazon company as well.
According to researchers, people with higher education are more likely to see automation as a more positive thing for companies. Automation usually gets rid of the work that is done by low skilled or unskilled workers. Having an advanced degree or a higher education could eliminate the fear of your job becoming fully automated because it requires more skill and the “human touch”.
