As an Ambassador, your job is to represent the interests of your nation at the next United Nations General Assembly, where everyone will get to vote on certain global problems the U.N. must try to solve.
Phase 2 of this Model U.N. project involves thinking about the issues ahead of time, so that when we interact for the General Assembly (Phase 3) you will already have a clear idea of how your country would like to see the world handle certain major global issues.
In four separate paragraphs of 100-200 words each, respond to each of the four prompts below. Together these paragraphs will be your nation’s “position essay,” outlining what you think your nations’ stance would be on real global political issues faced by the actual U.N. Start each paragraph of your essay below with the phrase: “The people of (YOUR NATION) want to vote (YES or NO) on the issue of (NAME THE ISSUE) for the following reasons:”
In each paragraph, make sure to cite reasons and evidence based on the information in your Phase 1 “brochure”. Use at least one piece of information from your brochure in your explanation of why your country would hold a certain stance on each issue. As always, your writing should be clear, concise, and free from spelling and grammatical errors to be eligible for full points.
Here are the four issues:
Trade Agreements. The global economy demands that international borders become more permeable so that people, goods, and information can move more freely. In service to this, the United Nations proposes that all member countries end economic sanctions and trade embargoes, and reduce all import tariffs by at least 50% in the next five years. Would your country vote YES or NO to this proposal? Why?
Pandemic Response. The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed that the world is poorly equipped to deal with the spread of highly contagious disease. Should another, potentially more deadly virus spread, we should be better prepared. In service to this goal, the United Nations proposes that all member countries pass laws mandating mask-wearing in public during quarantine periods, and set aside enough funds to pay all citizens $1,000 per month for up to 6 months to stay home during such periods. Would your country vote YES or NO to this proposal? Why?
Climate Change. The long-term crisis of climate change demands a reform of our energy policies. In service to this, the United Nations proposes that all member countries reduce their usage of fossil fuels by 50% in the next five years, and replace that energy with any combination of solar, wind, or nuclear power. Would your country vote YES or NO to this proposal? Why?
Women’s Rights. The prevalence of oppressive laws and gender norms in many countries has been identified as a challenge to the ideal of “universal human rights.” In service to increasing equality and opportunities for women, the United Nations proposes that all member countries institute equal educational and job opportunities for women, and dedicate at least $10 million in additional funding for the legal persecution of human rights violations against women per year. Would your country vote YES or NO to this proposal? Why?
