Using excerpts from the slave narratives that we have read thus far, select brief quotations to support Walker’s arguments in Article I. Our Wretchedness in Consequence of Slavery (scroll past the page verso, Appeal, & Preamble) from Appeal, in Four Articles; Together with a Preamble,to the Coloured Citizens of the World, but in Particular, and Very Expressly, to Those of the United States of America (1829): https://docsouth.unc.edu/nc/walker/walker.html
Note: This reading relies heavily on historical allusions. It’s okay if you do not understand all of the allusions; you should still be able to understand what Walker is saying is different about slavery in the Americas versus in other places and times.
Structuring the essay response
Address two of the arguments noted by Walker for why the practice of slavery in the United States is the worst of its kind in history. Organize the essay by devoting a paragraph to each of Walker’s arguments. In the first sentence, start by quoting one of Walker’s arguments (be sure to use a signal phrase – do not just drop in the quotation – also referred to as an isolated quotation – For example, “According to David Walker,”). In the second sentence, explain what his quotation means using your own words. You can start this sentence with a phrase such as “In other words” or “This statement means.” In the third sentence, transition into one of our readings to indicate that an example of Walker’s argument may be found in [note the writer’s name]’s narrative. Be sure to use only information related to slavery in the colonies in the Western hemisphere, i.e., the islands in the West Indies, or Caribbean, and the colonies in North America. You should quote from the writer’s narrative and then explain how the quotation illustrates Walker’s argument. Address at least two other writers using this same structure. Once you have included three examples from three different writers, the first paragraph is complete.
Repeat this same structure to address another argument by Walker.
