Part I: Film Notes/Personal Reflection

Briefly reflect on the film. Your reflection should be at least 1-2 paragraphs and should address noteworthy scenes and characters that are featured in the beginning, middle, and end of the film. Discuss the film’s educational value. How does it help you understand psychology through film? In other words, what insights did you gain into the major topic areas this week (e.g. Milgram, social psychology, research ethics, etc.)?

Part II: Psychological Application and Analysis

1.Select one of the Essential Elements of Science discussed in the “Why Science?” (Links to an external site.) Briefly discuss how the “element” you selected is illustrated in the film.

2.According to Deiner (2020), ethics are: “professional guidelines that offer researchers a template for making decisions that protect research participants from potential harm and that help steer scientists away from conflicts of interest or other situations that might compromise the integrity of their research. Do you think that Milgram’s study was unethical? Yes or no? Briefly explain your position using at least 1 example from the film.

3.How would you describe Milgram’s overall goal with his Obedience study? Would you describe the main “source” of his motivation to achieve his goal as intrinsic? extrinsic? or both? Briefly explain and include at least 1 example from the film that illustrates intrinsic or extrinsic motivation.

4.Obedience describes behavior changes produced by the commands of people in authority (Social Psychology, n.d.). One personality dimension that predicts obedience is authoritarianism. Take the How Much Do You Believe in Obeying Authorities? Quiz included in the Social Psychology reading (p.6). Were your results high, moderate, or low? Given what you know about this personality dimension, do you think that you would administer the high voltage level (450 volts) if you were a participant in the study? Why or why not? Based on the information provided in the film, how do you think Milgram would rate on the authoritarianism personality scale? Explain.

5.Provide one example where authority factors played a role in your obedience/compliance in work, school, or family-related real world instance. How do you feel about your behavior in that instance?
